Pointing finger at Sunday

By Larry Whiteside, Globe Staff, 08/07/96

Roger Clemens feels just fine. Well, fine enough to resume pitching Sunday in Milwaukee.

After missing four games while attending to personal matters at home in Houston, the Red Sox righthander returned to Fenway Park yesterday. He was still feeling some discomfort after losing a fingernail but was able to do light throwing, then work a little in the bullpen.

Last Friday, Clemens ripped a nail off the middle finger of his right hand while unloading some luggage. The nail is healing and should be better by Sunday.

``I can still feel some soreness in it,'' said Clemens. ``Otherwise, I feel fine.''

Vaughn's the hitter

Mo Vaughn apparently did not feel fine yesterday. After a 15-minute talk with manager Kevin Kennedy, he was switched to the designated hitter role, with Reggie Jefferson moving to first base. Vaughn went 0 for 4 but drove in a run ... Jeff Frye did double duty last night, starting the game in center field and finishing at second base. He went 2 for 4 with an RBI ... When the Red Sox scored in the sixth inning, it ended a streak of 21 innings in which Toronto had not allowed an earned run ... The Sox have gone 46-41 after a 6-19 start.

Sweet 16

Blue Jays starter Erik Hanson (10-13) retired 16 batters in a row ... Catcher Mike Stanley said the swelling in his leg had subsided and he might be able to play tonight. He bruised a tendon below the right knee while sliding into second Monday ... Kennedy welcomed lefthander Ken Grundt, who was called up from Pawtucket. ``We'll use him pretty much like [Eric Gunderson] before,'' said Kennedy. ``You need some diversity.''
